Chapter 2 – First Sight

I opened the door to the Blue Bar and stepped inside. It was a beautiful sunny day, and I hoped Muffy hadn’t left yet.
“Hi, Griffin!” I said cheerfully, making the older man look up from his guitar. “Is Muffy still here?”
“Yes she’s still upstairs. She won’t mind it if you disturb her, so go on up.”
I carefully clambered up the wooden ladder leading to Muffy’s room, wondering why Griffin had offered to let Muffy stay with him, and why she had said yes.
When I finally poked my head over the floor, she was sitting in front of her mirror, brushing her hair.
“Hey Muffy! Whatcha doing?” I bounced over to her bed and flopped down on it.
“Oh! ...You scared me, Alice! But it’s nice to see you so. I’m just doing my hair and makeup now.”
I sat up. “Aw, come on Muff. You’re pretty enough as it is without the makeup!”
She sighed and looked over at me. “Apparently not pretty enough to find a boyfriend, though.”
Actually, Muff, that’s exactly why I’m here.”
She smiled. “Feeling down again? That’s okay, I’ll always listen. So tell me what’s wrong.”
I lay back down and clasped my hands “You see...I want a real boyfriend. Someone who I have feelings for too. Someone who doesn’t care if everyone sees us holding hands. I mean, I know Marlin likes me, and he’s sweet enough, I guess, but he’s just not my type. I think I’m looking for someone a bit more...romantic.”
She thought for a moment. “Well, if you’re looking for a romantic, how about Rock?”
I wrinkled my nose. “No...Rock’s not romantic, he’s more...annoying.”
“I get what you mean. ...How about Gustafa?”
“Well, songs can be romantic, but he seriously looks like a hippie.”
“So you want romantic and good-looking, huh? Hmm...” Her face suddenly lit up. “Tell you what – go to Lumina’s mansion around eleven at night, tonight.”
“Why so late?”
“You’ll see,” she replied, turning back to her mirror. “Huh...I wish my hair was straight like yours...”
“Muffy, if you keep talking about how you wish you looked like me, I’m going to take your mirror away.”
She laughed, Okay, fine. You should probably get to work now, though.”
“Oh, right! It’s spring! I have to plant!” I sprang up form her bed and dashed over to the ladder.
“Don’t forget to stop by Lumina’s!’ She called, still giggling.

I carefully finished watering my turnips, potatoes, and cabbages, and as I straightened up, I decided I’d go talk to Nami. It was always better to have more than one opinion on something like this. Checking the time, she’d probably be heading to the beach.
I walked past the inn and all of its flowerpots filled with tiny yellow and white flowers, past crazy Daryl’s laboratory, and past Gustafa’s yurt, and stopped at the pond to say hello to Gustafa himself, who was sitting there strumming a ukulele.
“Hi...have you seen Nami?” I asked.
He stopped playing his ukulele and looked up at me from under his giant pointy green hat.
“What did you say?” he asked politely.
“I said, have you seen Nami?”
“Of course I’ve seen her. She’s not easy to miss with that bright red hair of hers.”
“No, no, have you seen her today?”
“No...Does she look different?”
I groaned, exasperated by this long-nosed hippie freak. “Never mind, Gustafa. I’ll just go find her myself.”
I turned to leave and was tapped on the shoulder.
“Were you looking for me?” A bored-sounding voice asked, right behind me.
“Nami!” I spun around to see her smiling. “Let’s go down to the beach...I want to ask you something.”
When we got there, she took off her shoes and stood in the water. “Ah...nice and cool. So what did you want to ask me?”
I sat down, and so did she. “You see...I was thinking...”
She looked over at me. “This isn’t the whole ‘I want a real boyfriend’ thing again, is it?”
“That’s exactly what it is.”
“Did you talk to Muffy yet?”
“Yes, I talked to her first. Why?”
“What did she tell you to do?”
“She asked me what I thought about Rock and Gustafa, because I told her I wanted a romantic kind of guy.”
“Ew...no to Rock, definitely. And Gustafa is so not your type.”
“That’s what I said, too. So she told me to go to Lumina’s around eleven tonight.”
“Eleven at night? Interesting that she thought of that option...so tell me, what kind of guy do you want?”
“Well, there’s the typical good-looking standard...and then I want kind of romantic, but confident.”
“How about mysterious?”
“Mmm...That sounds lovely. A guy who keeps me on the edge of my seat. Yes, definitely mysterious.”
She grinned. “Okay. Make sure you go to Lumina’s tonight. You’ll be happy.”
I looked over at her suspiciously, and stood up.
“Fine, I’ll go. But I’m trusting you guys!”
“You can count on us,” she said wryly.
I brushed the sand off my legs and absent-mindedly waved to Rock as I walked by.
“Eleven o’clock, huh?” I said to no one in particular.

I walked over to the front door of the inn and thought about asking Ruby to make lunch for me, then decided against it. I wasn’t very hungry, anyways.
I trudged past Vesta’s farm, looking for Celia.
“Hey Alice! Over here!” Celia stood up from where she was planting turnips and waved.
“Celia! How are you today?” I crawled over the wooden fence surrounding the field and trotted over to her.
“Oh, I’m fine.”
“Celia! What do you think you’re doing?” A man with jet black hair and a rather sour expression strode over to us, hands in pockets.
“I’m talking to Alice, can’t you tell, Marlin?”
The sour expression turned awkward, and Celia went back to planting turnips.
“Oh...um...hi, Alice. Sorry about that. I shouldn’t have yelled at Celia...” He looked at me with apologetic green eyes.
“That’s okay, Marlin. Are you done, Celia? I’d like to ask you something.”
“I am now. Come on, let’s go to the house.”
She dusted off her apron and linked arms with me, and together we strode off to the farmhouse.
“So what did you want to ask me? Can I get you anything?”She bustled about the kitchen preparing dinner for Vesta and Marlin.
“No thank you. You see, I know Marlin likes me...”
“But you don’t think you like him. I completely understand.”
“And I want a boyfriend who I can like back. Marlin’s just too...I don’t know...” I struggled to find the right word.
“Depressed?” offered Celia.
“That’s the easiest way to put it. But I want to let him down without hurting his feelings, and I thought you might know how to do that.” I looked at her hopefully.
“I’m really sorry Alice, but it’s impossible to do that without hurting his feelings. He really cares for you. I know you do, too, or else you wouldn’t care about hurting his feelings.”
I sat down on one of the wooden chairs.
“Muffy and Nami both told me to go to Lumina’s around eleven tonight.”
She turned around to face me. “Oh...really?” A wide smile lit up her face. “You said you were looking for a romantic, so...he’s perfect.” She muttered quietly.
“What did you say? Does this involve a guy?”
“You’ll find out tonight, I guess. Won’t you?”
“I most certainly will! Thanks Celia, I feel a lot better now.”

I wandered back towards my farm, then turned to go up to the spring. I followed the river upstream, and walked through a field of flowers to stop in the shade of a flowering peach tree by the spring.
“Why will no one tell me what is going ON!!!” I yelled to the world in frustration. I picked up a rock and threw it in the water, and only succeeded in getting myself wet.
Dripping, I sat down and sighed. This was pointless. If there was a guy involved, I would just have to wait and see for myself. I glanced at my watch. “Four more hours...it’s only seven. I should go make dinner.” My stomach growled as if to confirm this, and I shivered. The breeze wasn’t very nice after you got wet. “And I should probably change into dry clothes, too.”
I returned home and changed from my blue denim overalls to a pair of clean, dry, green ones. I couldn’t decide what to eat, so I just made one of my favorites – curry rice. It was the first thing I learned to cook, and I still never get tired of it. I sat down at my table and saw my dog and cat looking at me.
“I should probably feed you guys too, huh?”
Once I finished my dinner, fed my dog, York, and my cat, Siam, cleaned and dried the dishes, and watched some TV; it was still only eight o’clock.
“What if I show up early...?”
The idea was so intriguing that I couldn’t just sit in my house for three more hours. I got up, grabbed my jacket, and went outside to take a walk. I wandered all over town, from my house to the waterfall to the construction site to the beach, where I sat for a while, trying to decide what kind of guy my friends would want to keep secret from me.
“Hmm...Lots of muscles – no, Muffy would never be able to keep quiet about that one...” I closed my eyes and laughed softly. “Tall, definitely...skinny – but not too skinny, of course...” I looked at my watch again. “Holy smokes! I’ve only got ten minutes left!”
I leapt up from where I was sitting and dashed for the mansion.

Panting, I slowly trudged up the path to the mansions front door. I stopped to catch my breath for a second, hand on knees, looking at the ground, when I heard the door click open.
My head snapped up, taking in a tall, lean silvery haired figure I had never seen. He – or she, I could only see their back – was wearing a gray leopard print coat and purple pants. The figure turned around and looked at me with astonishing blue-green eyes.
“Hello, beautiful. Walking alone at night?”
“Uh...” I was speechless I had expected a cute guy, but not silver hair! And those eyes were almost unnatural! “Who are you? I’ve never seen you before...” my voice trailed off.
He chuckled. “I’m quite the ladies’ man, and a prince of the stars.” His voice was smooth and flowing.
“That doesn’t really answer my question, but...okay.” Those eyes would make you say anything.
“And who might you be?” He asked, lifting my chin with a single finger.
“Uh...um...I-I’m Alice,” I managed to stammer out.
“Such a charming name...” he murmured.
“Hey!” Lumina burst out of the mansion making us both look at her, and causing the man to drop his hand. “Aren’t you that famous thief who warns his victims ahead of time?”
I looked up at him in alarm. “You’re a thief...?” I whispered quietly. He looked back at me, touching the tip of my nose with one finger.
“Inconsequential. Sorry, but I’m a bit pressed for time.” He turned to leave, then stopped and looked back, laughing quietly. “Call me Phantom Skye, beautiful. I know we’ll meet again...It’s in the stars.”
“Wait right there!” Lumina rushed around the fountain.
“Hold up, doll. Don’t let such raw anger steal away your beauty.” He turned his eyes on her, making her flush pink.
“What a smooth talker...Phantom Skye...” said Lumina, awed.
“We’ll meet again, beautiful.” He was looking at me again...and then he turned and left, Lumina running to catch up.
“Wait...!” I called, but my words were lost to the wind. I just stood there in the moonlight.
Nami had said I’d be pleased...and Celia had said he was perfect. As for me...I didn’t know what to think. Yes, he was a thief...that was a little discouraging, but he was so pretty and confident for a thief! And of course, those beautiful blue-green eyes...I sighed.
“He...he got away from me!” Lumina had come back without my noticing, still pink form running or seeing Phantom Skye, I didn’t know. “That thief is so cool!”
I barely heard her as I walked back to my house.
“Phantom Skye, huh?” I whispered to thin air.
“You called, beautiful?” I spun around to see the thief again, still smiling.
“I thought you left?” I asked him, confused.
“Do you want me to leave?” He replied, frowning.
“No, that’s not what I meant...I just...thought you left. I didn’t know you were following me.”
“I wasn’t following you. You just called my name, and I responded.”
“I didn’t call your name, I whispered your name.”
He smiled and offered me his arm. “Would you like me to walk you home? No one will see me this time of night.”
I thought for a second. “Oh, okay. Why not?” I slipped my arm through his and we began walking.
“So tell me...what’s a nice girl like you doing out at such a late hour?”
“Oh, some of my friends told me to go by the mansion around eleven. I was expecting to meet someone new...but not someone like you.” What was I thinking? I just met this guy!
“What were you expecting?”
“Oh, I don’t know, really. ...Not silver hair and leopard print. And definitely not purple pants.”
“What do you have against purple pants?” he demanded, stopping.
“Oh, nothing, it’s just I didn’t expect a guy to be wearing them.”
“Well, I’m just full of surprises, aren’t I?”
“You sure are.” He was looking at me with those eyes again...
“This is the path to your house, isn’t it?” I glanced around. We were stopped behind the inn, where the path was.
“Why yes it is, thank you. I didn’t even notice.”
“Do you want me to walk you to your door?”
The thought was tempting, but I didn’t want to go too far. “No thank you. I’m sure I can find my way from here.” I smiled at him.
“If you’re sure, beautiful,” he replied, slipping his arm out of mine.
“Phantom Skye...” I began to ask.
“Just Skye, please,” he interrupted.
“Okay then, Skye. Can I ask you a question?”
“Fire away, beautiful Alice.” How sweet...I loved the way he said my name.
“What were you doing at Lumina’s mansion tonight?”
“Ah...” He looked away. “I did tell you I was a thief, right?”
“Of course.”
“Then there’s your answer,” he said. I sighed heavily, making him chuckle.
“Until we meet again, Alice...” he strolled silently away, leaving me standing on the path in front of my house, watching his shining silver hair disappear into the night.
